Learner Drivers

It is essential that when learning to drive a pupil must follow a structured learning programme-At A+ you will be given Structured Tuition following a logical sequence according to the DSA syllabus. Help and Advice on theory training will be given free of charge, including the availibility of Free Online Theory Mock Tests if required.

All of A+'s Driving Instructors are licenced and Regulated by the DSA and will give you continuous feedback on your progress and guidance on when to apply for your tests.
The DSA guide for the average number of driving lessons required by someone to prepare for the practical driving test is one and half hours per year of age. This can vary according to the individual but may serve as a rough guide.

Driving Lessons
May be taken according to Pupils requirements, from an hour per week to an intensive course. We would generally recommend a two hours driving lesson once a week as the best way to make good progress. (Substantial savings can be made in training time required by taking two hour driving lessons)
By paying for blocks of driving lessons in advance you will be eligible for discounts on our basic lesson prices. Gifts Vouchers are also available for any occasion.

Intensive Driving courses may be suitable for pupils with some previous experience who have already passed their Theory Test. The provision of an Intensive driving Course with a Test at the conclusion of the course often entails the re-arranging of an Instructors work schedule and therefore these courses attract a premium in cost.

Residential Driving courses are intensive driving course delivered in areas where we can arrange short notice tests. (Both Intensive and Residential courses requires an initial assessment driving lesson to allow us to confirm that a particular course will be suited to a Pupils requirements).

This page will take you through the steps that can be taken to get you on the road, see where you fit in and what your next step could be.

Obtaining a Provisional License
Many people are unsure about what the minimum age you can start learning to drive is, rumours have been going around for many years often confusing first time drivers.

You can send off for your provisional license when you are 16 but this does not become valid until your 17th Birthday.

So the minimum age for learning is 17 however, if you are in receipt of the higher rate of the motability component of the disability living allowance you may start to learn at age 16. Not sure if this applies to you? Just give us a ring on local rate 0845 166 4960 and one of our staff will be happy to give assistance.

Booking your first lessons

There is no set number of lessons that will get you at test standard as each individual learns at their own pace, your individual instructor will be able to assess your progress and give you an estimate to how many lessons you need.

We also offer Crash Courses & Residential Courses.

The Theory Test
You may have heard about the Theory Test from friends and family, this was introduced in 1996 and you will have to pass it before you can book your all important Practical.

As well as various training aids we have a free online Mock Theory Test that you can take on a regular basis to help you further prepare for it.

Yeah! I’ve passed it so now what?
Well done your half way there! You will continue with your driving lessons until you have reached test standard, then its time to book the Practical.
